NC State To Develop PHEVs

The price of petroleum fuel is on the rise.  The threat of global warming increases steadily.  The US dollar’s value is on the decline.  The country’s relation with oil producing countries is not that good.

These are reasons why the country needs to be independent in terms of the energy that we use up everyday.  Petroleum fuel will run out.  Thus, we should look at other sources of energy.  That’s what the North Carolina State University is doing right now; figuring out to develop vehicles that will not be dependent on petroleum fuel.

According to Triangle Business Journal, the state university has joined forces with Process Energy and Duke Energy.   The said partnership will be geared towards the development of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle which will be a very good alternative to gas consuming vehicles we now have on our roads.

According to Gov. Mike Easley, the teaming up of these institutions is aimed not only towards the development of the vehicle but also of the infrastructure that will support it.  What that means is that these guys behind the project will be making a car that will be able to run on electricity alone.  Obviously, it will use a power source which we can safely assume to be a rechargeable battery pack.

Now, that battery packs needs to be recharged in able for it to power the vehicle in question.  Since the battery pack is sure to be complicated, recharging it will not be as simple as plugging it into a socket in your wall.  This is the second aspect that the partnership between the three institutions will focus on; the development of infrastructure that will be able to support the vehicle that they will create.

Hopefully, they succeed in this endeavor so that in the near future, we will see PHEVs roaming our roads which are so clean that they will be much more efficient than vehicles equipped with conventional Acura engine parts.
