Chevy Volt In Full Blast By 2010

http://www.pleiades-enterprises.bigstep.com/CommuterCars/GM/ChevyVolt.jpg

The all-electric Chevy Volt is on its way to mass production. Thousands of units are expected to roll right into dealerships by 2010. As soon as the development of this hybrid is put into place and axle assemblies are perfectly fitted, the Chevy Volt is all set for the thousands of new car shoppers waiting for its ultimate day of release. According to the Auto Channel, Reuters reported that General Motors Corp plans a tough production run for its ground-breaking plug-in Chevy Volt. The accounts were according to a senior executive who at the same time advocates Congress to agree on tax incentives as well as to assist spark needs.

GM vice president for global program management, Jon Lauckner, stated that the auto manufacturer is aware of the present high costs of battery progress but looks ahead to the per-vehicle price to go down as the technology gets better.

“As volume scales up, you will move down this curve to see better economics going forward. You can’t get hung up on the economics of the first unit or the tenth unit,” Lauckner told an energy forum at the Center for American Progress.

“We’re talking about large numbers - in the tens of thousands,” he said. “It’s not a niche market.”

“Cost is the killer right now,” said Jack Deppe, a U.S. Energy Department consultant.

Recent approximations revealed that every 10 miles of electric power puts in approximately $1,500 in costs.

Hybrid specialist John German at Honda Motor Co stated that the case has not been completed for mass-market plug-ins in disagreement. There are a lot of questions about cost, competence and consumer awareness.

“That’s a helpful role government can play to speed the technology and bring these benefits forward,” Lauckner said.

Good Deal

There’s just more to expect each year. In fashion, in lifestyle, in government policies and yeah, even in cars. Praise be unto the car geniuses who never seem to get tired thinking of formula to achieve a faster, safer and yeah, you said it, better means of converting cars into “second homes” without compromising the social conscience that calls for some environment-friendly efforts among auto makers!

The 2008 Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) M6, available in coupe and convertible versions, has a 2-door, 4-passenger capacity that’s ideal for a luxury sports car, or a convertible sports car.

It is equipped with a standard 5.0-liter V10, 500 horsepower engine capable of 11-mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. Also, this BMW has no roof but has a three-layer softtop that powers open in about 25 seconds. Cool, isn’t it?! In addition, it offers some options for interior wind turbulence by having an adjustable vertical-glass rear window. Hmmm…

But most importantly, the 2008 BMW M6 Convertible features a special version of BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control, an excellent component of BMW parts that matches the quality of an Acura Integra wheel hub DSC functions by correcting unstable driving condition by applying accurate braking action to the individual wheels. Plus, it has a state-of-the-art passenger protection system powered by the Intelligent Safety and Information System (ISIS) that’s able to determine the intensity of a collision and turns on the vehicle’s necessary safety features.

And take note: BMW is also committed to “performance with a conscience”. The production and development of BMW automobiles require criteria such as resource efficiency and emission control and use of environment-friendly and recyclable materials in its interior.

Cool and safe - for $110,000, the 2008 BMW M6 is already a good deal isn’t it?

Washington Auto Show Goes Green

No doubt about it. Automakers are making great efforts towards the development and manufacturing of green vehicles. The North American International Auto Show has been full of green vehicles and each one was attracting much attention from the car enthusiasts.

Recently, The Auto Channel reported that the Washington Auto Show will also be full of green vehicles. According to the report, clean diesel engines will be taking center stage in the said motor show.

Allen Schaeffer, the executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum, had this to say: “With nearly 20 new and prototype diesel vehicles on display during Detroit’s auto show, and many on their way to Washington, 2008 will be the ‘year of clean diesel’. The unveiling of these new models shows that automakers are investing in this high performance, environmentally friendly technology.” The Diesel Technology Forum is consisted of automakers, engine manufacturers, auto parts manufacturer and energy supply companies.

In the past, the diesel engine has been avoided by American consumers due to the fact that diesel engines of the 70s are known for their loud operation and black soot emission. But today, automakers have succeeded in developing diesel engines which produces very little greenhouse gas. “The new diesels are clean, quiet, fun to drive and don’t require consumers to sacrifice power or performance to achieve better miles per gallon. The significant number of models introduced this year makes it an extremely exciting time for the U.S. diesel market,” said Schaeffer.

Today, there have been already a lot of diesel vehicles announced to be nearing their launch. Here are some of them:

  • BMW Group unveiled two vehicle models equipped with the BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance, the 335d and the X5 xDrive 35d, which will be available later this year.
  • Volkswagen will introduce an updated clean diesel Jetta into the U.S. market this year.
  • GM has plans to put a diesel engine in the Chevy Silverado beginning in 2009.
  • Audi unveiled the A4 sedan and expects to start selling the Q7 3.0 TDI by the end of 2008/early 2009.
  • Toyota will launch a diesel-powered Tundra pickup truck and Sequoia SUV in the U.S. soon.
  • Honda announced plans to put diesel engines in Acura vehicles starting in 2009, with the Honda lineup to follow.

These vehicles can be expected to bring about in the change in the attitude of Americans toward diesel engines. These vehicles are obviously more valuable than repair manuals.

Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions To Offer Hybrid Battery System For Chery’s Newest Car

The Chinese are known to be energy-conscious and that’s why Chery Automobile is offering a brand new A5 ISG hybrid sedan in the mid-season of 2008 which features combined benefits of fuel and electric vehicles with low carbon dioxide emission, great performance and less fuel-consumption. This is a great option for Chinese if they don’t prefer filling up their fuel tanks with fossil fuels. The all-new A5 ISG will be power-driven by a hybrid battery system enhanced by Johnson ControlsSaft Advanced Power Solutions.

According to The Auto Channel, Chery Automobile, China’s first major Chinese auto manufacturer, has selected nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries from Johnson Controls-Saft for its most up-to-date vehicle. The affiliation between Saft and Johnson Controls will mark on its significant presence globally for this agreement.

“As car sales continue to significantly increase in China, Johnson Controls-Saft is committed to partnering with automakers to develop fuel-efficient vehicles for consumers who want - and need - to make purchasing decisions that are good for the environment,” says Mary Ann Wright, who leads the Johnson Controls-Saft joint venture and is vice president and general manager of Johnson Controls’ hybrid battery business.

“With world-class engineering centers in the United States, Europe and China, we have the technical capability to partner with our customers as consumers around the world increasingly demand energy-efficient, high performance vehicles,” Wright said.

“This is as much about the successful launch and ability to commercially manufacture this vehicle as it is about the development of an effective engineering team with the technical capabilities to support China’s fast growing future needs in the hybrid automotive market,” she added.

Funds To Be Set Up For Renewable Energy

The threat of global warming is so real and everyone must be working towards the protection of the environment.  Burning petroleum fuel is one of the major cause of greenhouse gas emission which contributes greatly to global warming.  Thus, it is much better if we can find alternative energy sources so that we will no longer be burning petroleum fuel.

One institution taking an initiative towards the protection of the environment is Yellowstone Capital Partners.  Today, The Auto Channel reported that the firm has announced re launch of its second alternative energy fund called the Yellowstone Energy Ventures II L.P. or YEV II.

Yellowstone is expecting about $50 million worth of investment which will be invested on the development of green technologies. The fund will be managed by Yellowstone chairman Omar Sawaf, Bill Brewer, and Rick Owen.  I think it is safe to say that no part of the fund will go to the development of fog lights as there are already a lot of them out there.

Omar Sawaf had this to say regarding the action taken by Yellowstone:  “The global dynamics that motivated Yellowstone to create YEV I back in 2004 not only remain in place today, but are even stronger than they were at that time.  Strong global demand and economic growth in virtually every region of the world — combined with high capacity utilization and depleting supplies for fossil fuels, the global drive to use cleaner fuels to fight global warming, and energy security concerns — have combined to close the economic gap between fossil fuels and renewables.

“In addition, technology improvement in the alternative and renewable space continues to escalate at a rapid pace and increases in government regulation and incentives not only abroad, but now being seen in the U.S., are accelerating the adoption of these new energy technologies. We believe all of these factors make the alternative and renewable energy technology segment of the Cleantech industry an attractive and unique opportunity for long term investors. We also believe that Yellowstone’s early entry into the segment and the relationships we have developed over the past four years are creating significant deal flow that can benefit investors in both YEV I and YEV II.”

Poll Shows Increased Focus On Green Tech

With the increasing price of gasoline, it is not surprising that auto buyers are looking at hybrids and smaller vehicles for their next purchase. More importantly, the threat of global warming is finally being addressed and automakers are now developing and manufacturing green vehicles.

Recently, The Auto Channel reported that American audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG conducted a poll of 113 senior executives from the auto industry to see what they think will happen to green vehicles in the future and how consumers will react to certain vehicle classes.

Daron Gifford, National Automotive Leader for the firm, had this to say: “The industry knows where it is and knows where it needs to be. It needs to produce quality vehicles that are fuel efficient, especially in this economic cycle, and it needs to invest heavily in developing alternative sources of power. We found the execs in our survey more optimistic than past years, and that’s largely because the landscape before them is clearer on the direction they need to go.”

The Auto Channel reported: “To meet demand, auto execs in the KPMG survey said that in the next five years, in terms of global market share and units sold, 81 percent expect major increases in low cost/introduction cars and an equal percentage expect increases in hybrids. This was followed by cars, at 67 percent, and crossovers at 58 percent. Categories of vehicles expected to fall are SUVs and large pick-ups, with 47 percent projecting a decrease in SUVs and 50 percent projecting a decrease in large pickups.”

“The auto execs expect heavy investment in new models/products and new technologies in the next two years as well as building capacity in Asia. Not investing puts manufacturers at risk in terms of market and product differentiation, resulting in market share decline,” Gifford added. This means that you can expect more green vehicles in the very near future still equipped with radiators though.

Honda Announces Hybrid Plans

Honda President Takeo Fukui recently announced that hybrids will account for 10% of the company’s global car sales by 2010.

The second largest Japanese automaker introduced its first hybrid - the Insight - almost a decade ago. And to reach its goal in a matter of 3 years, the automaker will be adding 2 new hybrids to partner with the existing Civic Hybrid.

They are the Global Hybrid to go on sale in 2009, with a focus on making hybrid technology more affordable and a worldwide sales plan of 200,000 units, and a “sports hybrid” based on the CR-Z concept revealed at Tokyo Motor Show, New Zealand Herald reported.

Separately, Honda Canada entertains a number of engineering changes to Fit and Civic models. This is an effort to include the vehicles as part of the Government’s 2008 ecoAUTO Rebate Program Engineering changes to all 5-speed manual transmission-equipped 2008 Honda Fit (DX, LX and Sport) and all 5-speed manual transmission-equipped Honda Civic models (DX, DX-G, LX and EX-L) resulted in fuel economy rating reductions that qualify them for the Government of Canada’s 2008 ecoAUTO Rebate program, according to a release. Upgrades on engines, catalytic converters, and other auto parts paved the way for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

“We worked very hard within an incredibly short period of time with Honda’s research and development teams and our assembly facilities to make the necessary changes to allow manual transmission-equipped Fit and Civic models to qualify for the rebate program,” said Jim Miller, the executive vice president of Honda Canada.

“The changes that Honda Canada made to these Fit and Civic models are quite significant. However, we were able to make these engineering changes without any compromises to our full complement of standard safety features. This approach goes beyond industry and government requirements to ensure that Canadians are not forced to choose between environmental concerns or personal safety when buying a vehicle, regardless of its price or size. This is our ‘Honda Benefit’ for Canadians,” he concluded.

In addition to the government’s $1,000 rebate for all manual transmission-equipped Fit models, the automaker is offering a $750 gasoline card for all automatic transmission-equipped 2008 Fit models to provide Canadians with added value in recognition of the vehicles’ top-of-class safety and fuel efficiency.

How Do You Pick A Hybrid?

Tax benefits, slashed fuel expenses, environment-friendly factor – these are the primary reasons why auto purchasers are shifting to hybrids. And along with the growing demand for hybrids is the increase in rivalry among hybrid manufacturers.

With so many options available, it now becomes hard to choose which hybrid to buy. Automakers are offering different hybrid vehicles and varying features. Now, how are you to choose?

When you say hybrid, Toyota Prius may not be all alone in your mind. Because there are a growing number of hybrid automakers, it has become very hard to pick the right hybrid. Different automakers offer different features in their cars and each say their car is the most excellent in the market.

In choosing a hybrid, here are some notable tips from Car Junky:

1. Before buying a hybrid you will have to check what the market has to offer, make a comparative study and check the features that are available in each car. Each automaker will have something different to offer. Choose the one that will suit your needs the most.

2. Hybrids are environmental friendly and very low on fuel consumption. If you are thinking of buying a hybrid you won’t have to worry about your gasoline bills. Choose the right car that will give you maximum fuel benefits.

3. Check with the manufacture on how much mileage the car offers and its fuel efficiency, by doing so you will get an idea on how much fuel you can save when compared to the other normal as well as Hybrid cars.Fuel, mileage, efficiency are all aspects that you must compare before you make a firm decision on which Hybrid car you want to buy.

By comparing the different features you will be able to make a better decision on which car you want to buy. Toyota and Honda are the leading companies that manufacture very efficient hybrids at very affordable prices.

China Receives Another Hybrid Car

Chang’an Automotive Group made another hybrid car for the China car market. This new hybrid car was revealed in China and buyers are expected to get it next year.

Ford and Suzuki are the known partners of Chang’an and they all collaborated in building this new car which was made a part of a government-sponsored advanced-technology research program.

There are plenty of car makers opting to make hybrid cars be sold in the China car market. This movement is because of the growing demand on hybrid cars even in the Asian car market. Chery, SAIC and BYD are just a few among the car makers opting to build hybrid cars for 2008 to 2009. General Motors has mentioned its plans to begin selling a gas-electric version of the China-market Buick LaCrosse next summer - just before the start of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Jiexun crossover vehicle was revealed by Chang’an last week. According to the officials during the interview, the new car is set to go out for competition with Euro IV emissions standards and has the potential to reduce fuel consumption by 20 percent. It also handles a fuel economy of 36 mpg with its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor.

The maker also gave the new hybrid car a very stylish look. And it is expected to come having the same price tag as Jiexun HEV but is higher than the expected standard gasoline-powered Jiexun - around $20,000, or roughly half the price of the China-built Toyota Prius. The Chinese car company is planning to donate 10 Jiexun HEVs to the Beijing Olympics.

Ford Plug-Ins On The Road

The Ford Motor Company is insistently continuing to enhance plug-in hybrid technology with their two different innovative applications on research demonstration vehicles. It is intended to help develop the functionality and stability of lithium-ion battery packs and the presentation of plug-in hybrid technology in global market in the future. Electrifying as spark plug wires, isn’t it?

According to Ford’s press release, the first Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid demonstration fleet was brought to Southern California Edison for further evaluation and testing during the first few days of the month. Under the exceptional two-year joint venture with the utility corporation, a 20-unit Escape will be tested in California, first in the utility’s electric vehicle fleet, and later with chosen residential clients.

“To deliver the superior fuel economy of our PHEVs to the customer – at a value that is not cost prohibitive, we are working with our partners, Southern California Edison, to identify new business models. Such models could address battery ownership issues and customer, utility and automaker value as it relates to the electrification of vehicles,” says Sherif Marakby, the chief engineer for Ford’s Global Core Hybrid Engineering.

“While much progress has been made to date, certainly, many significant technical hurdles need to be overcome before a vehicle such as the Edge with HySeries Drive can become a reality. These types of vehicles remain prohibitively expensive. The single biggest hurdle to plug-ins remains the cost of lithium-ion batteries. In addition, much work also needs to be done to make fuel cells more durable and to create a hydrogen infrastructure,” says Mujeeb Ijaz, the manager of fuel cell vehicle engineering.
